heard about it for decades, but never actually looked at it.
didn't realize it was such a short thing.
nothing there about the process of electing abbots --does that mean that
they
followed The Rule in such matters?

The passage in the Rule of St Benedict is even less precise
"... the institution of the Abbot: he should be appointed whom the united
community chooses in the fear of God, or whom a smaller part of the
community chooses with the sounder judgement."
(Translated by Abbot Parry, OSB with commentary by Esther de Waal,
Gracewing, 1990. page 103 - chapter lxiv )
So the idea is that a unanamous election is the optimum scenario but with a
majority result being second best, but it does not indicated how large the
majority should be.
