Nantes appears to have two Deans witnessing the document.
the "Series Decanorum" for the cathedral of Nantes given in GC, XIV, cc.
839ff
seems to be quite "regular" in the 12th c. to me --only one Dean at a time,
with some lacunae, but no multiples.
@ GC does NOT quote EVERY charter to be found in Dom Morice's "Preuves"
which is also an 18th C Maurist work but one by a Breton patriot.
could one of your deans be from another diocese (or, as i suggested, another
--lesser-- sort of "dean") and is listed among the witnesses just because he
happened to be present when the charter was written up?
@ Possible.
original 12th c. charters are rather scrupulous about maintaining an
hierarchy
in their lists, according to the rank of the individuals.
@ I have noted ths and made deductions in the past on this assumption.
are the two Deans listed together,
@ YES, after the Archdeacon and before the Precentor,
or is one of them somewhat farther down the
witness list? (if the latter, then it would certainly suggest that the
second
guy was not a Dean of Nantes --or even a Dean of any cathedral, but one of
lesser rank.)
in a lot of the 12th c. charters i have seen a part of the title (either
"decanus" or the name of the church the guy was Dean of) was superscripted
above the other part.
frequently, these superscriptions proved to be something of a headache for
editors, and they just left them out.
(though the really good eds. certainly included them --is your charter
edited
from an original or a cartulary or other sort of copy?)
@ Edited from a pancart. Part of an (unpublished ?) thesis (not mine).
i'm sending you the GC page in question off list.
is one of your Deans (or both) in that list?
@ BOTH with different dates attached.
