medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Prof Greeley,
No offence intended, I assure you. The original confusion arose from Mr
Crocket's use of the expression "Geo II" which was - I think quite
pardonably - misunderstood by an English woman to refer to an 18th C King
rather than a 21st C President. This expression "American Plantations" which
you find objectionable occurrs frequently in English histories of and about
the 18th century and is, as far as I was aware, the normal, unpejorative,
term. My intention in using it was to refer to the tobacco and cotton
producing estates to which English convicts were sold as slaves for fixed
terms following their conviction in the English courts. As I am sure you
must know, this servitude was frequently an act of mercy shown by the king
to criminals whose original sentence had been death by hanging. The point
was that I was mistified by the reference to "Geo II" being a mass murderer
when all I knew of the English king was that he was - from time to time -
merciful when the law was not.
I agree we have got seriously off (mediaeval) topic, and this thread should
cease - although I have personally found some of the banter good humoured
fun.
If I have inadvertantly touched a sensitive topic, I apologise.
Brenda M Cook.

"American plantations?" Still smarting over the War of Independence, are
we? What a nasty email, clothed in smug righteousness, to send out.
Please unsubscribe me. There is nothing relevant to medieval religion in
this or several other posts.
