Hello Robyn,
To my best knowledge , there isn’t much published RE of performance management. I attach a paper by a colleague who did his PhD research on quality management, using the RE approach. Unfortunately, his dissertation is in French. I also add two of my own papers, which reported on realist case studies that were part of my PhD research (click here for the dissertation: www.itg.be/itg/Uploads/Volksgezondheid/PhD_BMarchal.pdf).

Dear all
Good day. As part of my PhD research, I am applying realist evaluation to the study of "Outcome Management", a particular performance management approach, designed to monitor the performance of social services. Outcome Management was first adopted from a US-based non-profit education centre by a public sector organisation in Singapore and then disseminated to the local voluntary organisations for the monitoring of client outcomes for funded social services. Outcome Management is intended to improve social service standards and quality among voluntary organisations in the long term.
My study aims to assess the extent to which the actual design, implementation and use of Outcome Management, is congruent with its underlying theory. Some questions I hope to address in my research include: How is Outcome Management supposed to work in theory, in terms of its intended design, implementation and use? How does Outcome Management work in practice (in terms of its design, implementation and use) along its implementation chain (i.e. US-based non-profit education centre, public sector organisation, voluntary organisations)? What are the existing gaps between theory and practice? How Outcome Management works for whom, under what conditions and why?
I am wondering if there has been previous or any current research that apply realist evaluation to the study of performance management in general? Thank you!
Regards,
Robyn
