Jude, here goes my Toast...
Dear colleagues:
Before to start, please look at 4:15-5:11 on this video:

Let me emphasize...
*
"No human being can be more human than another human being. I liberate you
from my ignorance."
-- Maya Angelou *
And now I take Jude words and raise my glass... Cheers, For your health and
happiness my friends!
Perhaps many PHD Design-List members do not participate here from the
characteristics of a unique real reality of what this list is or could or
must be definitely; but on what this PHD Design-List mean to us.
To me the list means just one thing: nutritious conversational meeting with
people that cares about design, some wise and expert, some like me jumbled
and cluttered to communicate ideas, but all of them, of us, invaluable an
unique in her being.
In spite of my linguistic limitations, dear and admired Ken, and Terry and
Tim and you all. What happen here affects me a lot and has an impact
(believe it or not) in my faculty and in my design students. And I care
about. Please, you can disappear whenever you wish, but just think also on
returning, in time.
I want to made echo of David Sless savvy words on the matter:
*Like almost any community I know, including my own family, debates can be
heated and at time acrimonious, often with logic defying arguments*
But there is always hope. The "ad hominen epistemological value and
emotion-laden email fight of the last days" remind me (an I guess to all
us) that we are human, and and we can, once in a while, quarrel.
Here in what today is named South America Exists something called Tinku, an
Andean tradition, of ritualistic combat. It began in the northern region
of Potosí in Bolivia. By the way, in the language of Quechua people, the
word "tinku" means encounter, and at the same time in the language of
Aymara people it means "physical attack". Exists also a philosophically
more profound concept derived of the first (by adding the letter 'Y', mark
of the infinitive) to define a material and spiritual sort of deep
meeting-clash, this is Tinkuy...
Here is the explanation (I apologize, perhaps is just for those who
understand Spanish)...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGfcAHoA2aQ
Tinkuy express both material, and conceptual, as physical and spiritual,
conjunction of roads, rivers, mountains, minds, hearts, meeting place,
perpetual coincidence where ideas are set up... and rememeber, whenever
mighty rivers meet each other, there is always powerful and dreadful whirl
pools or swirls (sometimes if we fall into one, we think we're going to
drown) but if we swim hard, and we can escape drowning, then we discover a
new and bigger river, emerging in front of us, result of the meeting and
clash of the former singular rivers, a new a plural river...
Hope to see you and read you all anew, swimming together in bigger and more
plural design rivers.
What do you think? Who is the next to make a toast?
In perennial Design Tinkuy with you all,
Greetings from the big, beautiful and chaotic city of Bogotá
