Job description
International Art Education is focused on visual culture education that includes media education,
art teaching, design education and various skills of mediating cultural heritage. The cooperation
between university units of art education grants a rich approach to the discipline: the combination
of art and education opens up into questions that are fundamental in cross-cultural understanding.
The primary research area is art education in all levels of institutional education and the
international exchange of art education studies.

Professional responsibilities will include active participation in developing art education research,
raising external funding, supervising doctoral students, building the international research
connections and contributing to the art education study program. Department of Art includes
various approaches to contemporary art and visual culture; a dialogue with these approaches will
be one of the main tools of art education and the research of it.
The research focus areas in the department are articulated as follows:
The relationship between art and education
The social and cultural significance of contemporary art
The importance of artistic and pedagogical interventions
New areas of visual culture and creative economy
The methodology of artistic research
Department of Art includes research in contemporary art, fine art, environmental art, art education,
eLearning and multiform education, art based environmental education, design education, art
curating, art mediating, media education and art in well-being
Requirements
Throughout their careers, those in the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and
guide scientific research, to provide related higher academic education, to follow the advances of
their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal
interaction and international collaboration in their field.
The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research, teaching and supervising skills. In
addition, they are reviewed based on their academic leadership and activity in scientific
community.
Applicants are expected to have doctoral degree in a relevant field. The candidate should have a
proven track record of publications in international refereed journals. The candidate should have
demonstrated ability to operate in international educational networks and to teach and supervise
students. Additionally, we value multidisciplinary networks. We expect the candidate to have
excellent language skills in English.
