The Department of Music at Durham University are seeking an outstanding scholar in any branch of musicology to lead the Music Department through the next stage of its development.
Chair in Music (Ref. 2487) Salary will be by negotiation within the Professorial range.
The department has benefited from significant investment in recent years, and has expanded and diversified its staffing and activities in both research and teaching. The next few years offer opportunities for further exciting developments, and we are seeking a new Chair to lead the department through this period.
Durham's Music Department has established internationally-renowned research strengths in historical musicology, ethnomusicology and critical aesthetics, composition and performance. Recent strategic investment in the department has added music cognition and live computer music to its portfolio. The new professorial appointment will strengthen one or more of these areas and/or theory and analysis. Our strategic priority is to develop innovative connections and interdisciplinary dialogue between our areas of strength.
Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in the University.
The successful applicant will be a researcher of international distinction with a strong record of academic leadership. S/he will be expected in the first instance to take up the role of Head of Department, and to provide the department with dynamic and proactive leadership over the next 3 years. S/he will be expected to make a significant and substantial impact in an area of music research, and to strengthen and enrich the department's research culture more broadly. The postholder will have a track record of postgraduate supervision and a commitment to excellence in teaching, contributing constructively to the ongoing development of our BA and MA curricula.
