medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
my interest in Odo Rigaud's visitations is limited to his descriptions of the
priory of St. Lomer of Blois at St-Sulpice-sur-Risle, near L'Aigle (diocese of
Evreux), and i have a question or two about how to interpret what he says...
it seems that he visited this house four times --in 1250, 1255, 1258 and 1269
(pp. 79, 348, 348 and 720 in the O'Sullivan edition,
http://hdl.handle.net/2027/heb.06039.0001.001).
all the visits are similar --to the Archbishop's shock and dismay, the monks
are eating meat, sleeping on feather beds and, in one instance, even wearing
linen shirts[!].
in several entries, the income of the priory is given:
--They have an income of 250 pounds; they owe about a hundred pounds.
--They have an income of 250 pounds; more was owed to them than they owed.
--They had an income of about 300 pounds.
am i right in understanding this amount as the total *annual* income of the
priory?
to whom do they owe this 100 pounds?
is it some kind of accumulated back tithes?
did the priory owed tithes?
to whom?
the bishop?
or is this what the priory owes to the mother house (i.e., Blois)?
thanks for any help.
