Hi
If you're looking for pure forum, Vanilla rocks - http://vanillaforums.org/
. They have both a hosted (paid) and self-hosted (free) model. Does all the
forumy stuff you'd expect. It also in theory hooks with Wordpress although
IIRC the integration is actually pretty poor. For better integration, go
bbpress. The downside with bbpress is it does some weird theming stuff and
the documentation is a bit crap.
For full-on community stuff, BuddyPress, which does all of the above plus
all the private messaging, friending, all o that.
Or - just WP if it is simple commenting / threading. P2 theme is an
interesting concept to look at too - see http://p2theme.com/
Cheers
Mike

Hi all
Another piece of forum software to keep your eye on is Discourse - it's
still in development, but will supposedly 'reimagine' the approach to
forums once released:

Many thanks for your prompt responses, I will check if we host the
Wordpress site and look into the other suggestions.
This group is truly very useful.
Much appreciated.

Subject: Museums volunteer blog - forum software
Dear All,
We're looking for message board software -to create an interactive space
where volunteers can pose questions and engage with one another in
various subject areas, private and moderated.
The museums team already has a Wordpress blog but that doesn't appear to
allow users to chip in with comments easily, unless we're not using it
properly.
I'm currently looking at Google+ but never used the communities section
(well, I don't really use Google+). We're keen to make it as easy as
possible for them to be able to stay in touch before or after their
shift in the museum.
Does anyone have experience of using Google+ Communities and/or can
suggest a better online solution?
Thanks ever-so,
Kat
