Actually S1 have been leading the way on trying to sort out the UoM and other reporting issues. The reason that there are difficulties are more to do with the poor data quality if our lab reports - see www.ychi.leeds.ac.uk/pmipunits - and misinterpretations of EDIFACT message specs. For an analysis of the origins of the problems see the paper linked from the home page.
Sadly our system architectures and data structures are now well behind the times for modern systems in pathology, in middleware and in some of the older clinical systems. Hopefully by adopting NLMC and upgrading the messaging systems we can move into the 21st Century and safely exchange data at a clinical level.
The attached article was written to try to shake the profession out of its complacency.
Happy to expand on this if this provokes outrage.

I suspect they have the same difficulty.
I believe there have been problems with System 1 over units as well.
What's the stance of our UK National Institute for Health Informatics? Rick - please respond.

What do they do about other tests that we may have to report as > x or < x due to analyser/reagent linitations?
I suspect we would all hold that ">" or "<" are valid characters in defined circumstances

Precisely. But System 1 appear to know better...

You are correct and not being stroppy IMHO.
If the right way is to report >90, then their system should cope.

I have been contacted by TDP - who produce the System 1 GP Computer System complaining that we report eGFRs above 90 as >90 and not as an absolute value.
This does not fit with their new system and gets marked as Abnormal. One of our GPs has raised the matter with them.
I don't think it was a problem with previous versions.
Is this a National Problem - has anyone else had a communication from them? Is it just me who thinks it's their problem?
They want me to give them the references to reporting in this fashion as it does not fit the specification to which they are working. I suggested that the people who drew up the specification need to look at it again.
Am I just being stroppy?
