Dear all,
Many thanks to those who responded to my question about ostrich bones at Roman sites outside of the Mediterranean. It appears that there are none (although the odd bit from other exotics surfaces in these northern provinces). Nadja Pollath's database on European Fauna (comprising published data (until the early 2000s) from all over Europe from the Palaeolithic to Early Modern Times) noted five records for ostrich: Rome-Meta Sudans, Samos-Heraion, Palaepaphos-Terathoudhia, Kition, Los Millares -- but of these the Rome-Meta Sudans site is the only Roman period example (the others are earlier).
Michael
