Abstract
Child wheelchair users will sometimes remain seated in their wheelchair when travelling in a road vehicle. Typically, both the child and their wheelchair are restrained to the vehicle. This is intended to reduce the risk of injury to the child (and to other passengers) in the event of a crash. However, children’s wheelchairs appear to offer only rudimentary protection compared to that provided by vehicle seats and child restraint systems. This talk will summarise research to explore child safety in wheelchairs in vehicles and will draw on the findings of a series of crash test experiments with instrumented dummies.
About the Speaker
Costandinos is a Principal Researcher at TRL with experience of leading complex vehicle safety research projects to inform changes to policy, regulation and test procedures. His research encompasses the use of real-world collision data to determine the cause and mechanism of injury and the effectiveness of vehicle design and safety features. He also performs physical experiments with crash test dummies and undertakes biomechanical analyses of the dummy kinematics and measurement data to comment on the risk of injury to humans.
Next CTS Seminar
Dr. Theodore Tsekeris (Centre of Planning and Economic Research (KEPE), Greece) will be leading a seminar titled “Impacts of transport investments and market access on regional specification patterns” at Imperial College on Wednesday 13th March @ 16:00
About the CTS Seminar Series
The CTS seminar series aims to facilitate discussion on current research topics in the transport field. Seminars are held jointly with our colleagues in the Centre for Transport Studies at University College London. They are usually held on Wednesday afternoons at Imperial College London or University College London.
Seminars are free of charge and open to all interested parties. Booking is not required.
