medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Brenda and Karl,
Many thanks!
I came across the story of a priest marrying a saint with Friedrich
Sunder's Gnadenleben and the editor of the text, Sigfried Ringler,
pointed out the story of Paulinus and St. Agnes in Legenda Aurea, but
now I see that there is a huge tradition of similar stories. The case of
Friedrich obviously shares many similarities with these legends though
there are also many differences (there is no ring or statue and though
Sunder was fond of Virgin Mary and actually seems to re-tell other
exempli concerning Mary he does not get married with her but instead
with Agatha). The theme behind the stories of priest marrying a saint
(usually Virgin Mary) seems to be the choice of celibacy over earthly
marriage which in Friedrich's case is again a bit complicated question,
but seems to lurk behind his marriage with a saint anyhow.
Best,
Meri
