medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks, Herwig; that's very useful. I'd forgoten about the development of brevia as a more informal class of documents. In fact, I just spent some time randomly paging through Boyle's "Survey of the Vatican Archives," and now my head is swimming and I'm wondering how anyone ever finds anything in there. He says the earliest brevia dates from 1390 but doesn't decribe its method of dating other than to mention that brevia adopted the phrase "sub anulos piscatoris" as a convention.
Best,
John

> Thanks, Stan. Your explanation makes perfect sense of what I saw in my browse through the AAS, especially for 20th-C documents. It would be interesting to know how far back the chancery started using modern dating for routine documents.
it depends. According to Rabikauskas the Chancery was ordered to use
this dating for formal papal letters with a lead bull under Pius X in
the early 20th century. However, for brevia, the modern dating (.th day
of month) was used from the beginning of this form of papal letter,
around 1400.
Best, Herwig
