Today's Bookseller reports on a workshop for Foyle's staff seeking
bright ideas for the shop.
Much of it applicable to libraries....?

» Shelf control at future Foyles
Dynamic front-of-store displays, moveable bookshelves, a members'
club, books on conveyor belts ('Yo Sushi' style), and the Espresso
Book Machine: these were some of the ideas that came up at the Foyles
Bookshop Workshop (#FutureFoyles
http://thebookseller.msgfocus.com/c/1ETzdjx2gNq4uHK6grCfIyD for those
on Twitter), the first session of which took place in London
yesterday.
The first discussion broadly centred on how you re-imagine a brand new
bookshop in a physical setting, offering at its heart printed books to
real customers.
This sparked a number of debates, with some attendees wondering how to
fit digital into the equation (the Apple stores were constantly
referenced), but others adamant that what customers would actually
want was a space to breathe, an area where the physical (human?)
experience of shopping and browsing were emphasized. A 'Do Not
Disturb' or 'SelfControl' application for dedicated book buyers.
Some, however, thought bookshops needed to engage with the digital
evolution, with book/ebook bundling, QR codes, virtual (even
holographic) booksellers, devices to play with, and shelves that
displayed an online stock list alongside the physical books (with
books delivered by Willy Wonka pipes, or those sushi-style conveyor
belts).
The good thing about the workshops are that they are just the
beginning of the process. No-one idea will fit all bookshops, but bits
of different ideas might work across many stores. We'll also use the
feedback from the first workshop to help push the second workshop
(taking place this Friday) on a little.

US digital seer Mike Shatzkin has also been thinking about the future
bookselling with the suggeston that vendor-managed inventory might be
one economic solutio
http://thebookseller.msgfocus.com/c/1ETzXoUgC6nvh6ncEVuEGir, as least
for those retailers who are happy for publishers to help curate their
stores. Meanwhile, Victoria Barnsley' suggestion that booksellers
charge for browsing has met with a robust response online

Thanks to a spot in Amazon's Kindle Daily Deal promotion, Will Self's
Great Apes joins this week's e-bestseller list in sixth place as the
highest new entry.
Stephen Leather returns to the top 10 following a brief hiatus. His
self-published Take Two is currently one of the bestselling crime
novels on Amazon.co.uk - the 79p novel sitting behind only Chris
Ewan's Safe House (20p) and David Mark's Dark Winter (20p) in the
online retailer's Kindle bestseller list.
