Well, we do not use it, but like with the Ca correction formulas as well, it is important which albumin method you use. NB: the more well-known and wide-spread Ca adjustment formulas were developed for the BCG albumin test but they do not work very well with the BCP alb results. From the average alb. of 40 it seems that the below formula also was derived with BCG albumin.
Problem is that these formulas are everywhere on the net and if the lab does not proved adjusted Ca results then dr-s also use them w/o knowing what albumin method their lab is using.
This leads me to a question primarily to BCP albumin test users:
Could you share your Ca adjustment formula that you currently use in your lab?
If you have an in-house verified formula, do you apply any limitations for the albumin conc. within which the formula is valid?
I will collate and share all responses.
Kind regards, Rita

Subject: Corrected Magnesium
As do many labs, we report an adjusted/corrected Calcium.
Magnesium is about 25% albumin bound. Does anyone report an adjusted/corrected Magnesium?
The following formula is in the literature
Mg (Corrected) = Mg (total) + 0.005 (40 - Albumin)
Does anyone use it, or similar?
We measure the Mg in our parenteral feeding patients but are finding that the surgeons are administering Mg on the basis of low total, despite sometimes VERY low albumins. Of course, this may do no harm at all but...
