Organisational Environment

The School of English, Media Studies, and Art History (EMSAH) is a
large, research-intensive unit with an international reputation for
outstanding research and teaching in English Literature, Art History,
Communication, Media, Communication and Cultural Studies, Film and
Television Studies, Creative and Professional Writing, Drama, Museum
Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies. It has 45 academic and
research staff and seven professional staff. EMSAH academics are
widely published internationally and have extensive research
backgrounds. The School is one of four schools within the Faculty of
Arts and is based on the St Lucia Campus.
The School teaches into the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Creative
Arts, the Bachelor of Communication, and the Bachelor of International
Studies, and has a suite of postgraduate coursework programs. Its
postgraduate programs include Creative Writing; Writing, Editing, and
Publishing; Museum Studies; and Science Communication. EMSAH attracts
a large number of Australian and international students to its
research higher degree programs, which may be undertaken as PhD or
MPhil or in a range of specialised programs including Cultural
Studies, Media Studies, and Film and Television Studies.
Film and Television Studies is part of a broader area of
interdisciplinary teaching and research that includes Media,
Communication, and Cultural Studies. It comprises a major at the
undergraduate level, and MPhil and PhD degrees by research. Enrolments
in the majors and postgraduate programs are high, including more than
40 Research Higher Degree students. The Media, Communication, and
Cultural Studies Area is staffed by leading teachers and researchers
who actively participate in industry networks. Staff publications
include work on Film and Television History and Aesthetics, Film
Theory and Reception, Television Studies, Adaptation Studies,
Australian Cultural Studies, Celebrity Culture, Digital Humanities,
Public Service Broadcasting, Science Communication, Social Media, and
Media Industries.

DUTY STATEMENT
Primary Purpose of Position
To perform as Lecturer level B in undergraduate teaching within Film
and Television Studies. Teaching methods may include lecture, seminar,
tutorial and online formats. The successful candidate will be required
to contribute to the teaching of a range of introductory and advanced
level Film and Television Studies units as required, including courses
engaging with film and television theory, aesthetic analysis, and the
history of film and television in national and global screen cultures.
The successful candidate is expected to have and maintain a record of
high quality research. The successful candidate will also be expected
to assist in the further development of the standing of the School and
to attract research funding.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Teaching and Learning
• Teaching into undergraduate courses in the BA program and other
programs, as required;
• Coordinating courses in the Film and Television Major;
• Teaching into the honours program and postgraduate courses, as required;
• Initiating and developing new courses, where relevant, which may
include interdisciplinary courses;
• Teaching and supervising at research higher degree levels;
• Consulting with students, as required;
• Supervising tutors in undergraduate courses as required;
• Providing support for other positions during absences; and
• Where appropriate, teaching subjects in flexible delivery mode.
Research
• Maintaining an established research program in Film Studies and/or
Television Studies
• Pursuing opportunities to seek research funding and to collaborate
on grant applications;
• Conducting and publishing high-quality research of national and
international significance;
• Providing advice to fellow staff members and postgraduate coursework
students to advance their research and scholarship; and
• Working with colleagues, postgraduates, and collaborators from
outside of the University of Queensland in the development of joint
research projects;
Industry and Community Engagement
• Fostering the School’s relations with industry, government
departments, and professional bodies;
• Participating in promoting a national and international exchange of
ideas and debate in the discipline; and
• Acting as a spokesperson and advocate for the discipline in the
wider community, where appropriate.
Administration
• Participating in School decision-making and administrative roles and duties;

Qualifications
Essential
• A PhD within the field of Film and Television Studies, or a closely
related field.
Knowledge and Skills

• Demonstrated expert knowledge of Film and Television Studies.
• Effective undergraduate teaching skills in Film and Television Studies.
• Ability to produce outstanding research within the field.
• Evidence of ongoing research projects: for example, publications and
funding applications.
• Curriculum development skills.
• Ability to develop online course materials and to use alternative
modes of teaching, digital technologies, and flexible learning
options.
Desirable
• Developed industry liaisons and professional contacts
Experience
Essential
• Experience in tutoring, lecturing, course coordination, and in
preparing and delivering course modules.
• Evidence of high-quality tertiary teaching outcomes, especially in
undergraduate teaching evaluations.
