Anyone interested in the ideas sparked off by the connections between Ivan Illich's ideas and public libraries might also be interested in a new book by Cindy Milstein and Erik Ruin: Paths Toward Utopia: Graphic Explorations of Everyday Anarchism**, in which they devote a chapter to the argument that public libraries provide a model for wider society:
"...the public library is itself an idea ripe for borrowing, a uniquely beloved template for
Libraries-as-Commons - or more generally, places held in common for use sharing &
enjoyment, sustained & collectively determined by their users."
The central theme of the book is about identifying existing patterns of human behaviour and social organisation which can be seen as the embryonic form of a new society.
A preview of Paths Toward Utopia is available on Google Books:

Some cracking stuff in this edition of Post-Lib, Bob Usherwood's critique of the neo-liberal agenda in Libraries is spot on, Frances as usual doesn't pull her punches and Dan Grace is now my hero due to the fact that he is the first person that I know of, except for me, to have mentioned Ivan Illich in an article about libraries!
