Hi Terry,
I think it is a little unfair to say *"Looking back, I think we will find
the benefits of Rittel and Weber's ideas*
*were limited to only the period immediately after their publication". *I
can see how problematic it can be to define a 'wicked' problem when each is
entirely unique in its complexity. What Rittel and Weber offer is
simplistic, but to be more specific would be more problematic (and i feel,
more naive). Unfortunately as a result, some have taken these comments too
literally and developed overly simplistic methods in response.
I do not disagree with your comments regarding the misinterpretations of
'wicked' problems. I have read papers that refer to this term (for better
or worse, it has become inseparable with design thinking) that do not refer
to the original paper. Whether anyone deems Rittel and Weber's paper as
good or bad, valid or invalid, is in my opinion irrelevant in this context.
When asked for fundamental readings on design thinking, this paper is a key
reference for the development of design thinking. It is up to the
researcher to discuss the merits of the paper in his or her thesis. But to
dismiss the paper entirely because it may have been interpreted as 'bad' is
what i would classify as ignorant for a student or professional researching
this topic.
I am also keen to learn what you are referring to when you mention this
paper has " led to a swathe of unhelpful
design theory that in itself is invalids and falsely justified" ?
Ken has already said all else that i could add to this discussion
Kind Regards,
-Stefanie
