Dear Terry,
I'm happy you liked reading the paper. I wonder which parts
you read? Not the abstract and introduction, it seems.
In both these I cite Smithers (1996) and Smithers (1998) as
publications of KLDE (Knowledge Level Design as Exploration).
I have put copies of these in my Dropbox public folder with
links at the end of this message. [Just clicking on these
links should open the PDF file in a web browser.]
Smithers (1996) presents the arguments for and identifies the
need for for a Knowledge Level theory of designing in design
research.
Smithers (1998) presents the theory (as it then was) with no
testing. But is does show how KLDE can account for and
explain the folk categories of routine, innovative, and
original designing. Something other theories don't seem able
to do. ... It's like Heineken (beer), "it refreshes the
parts other [beers] design theories cannot reach." Fosters
doesn't do it! ... Actually, what you really need is Real
Ale, of course.
A more recent publication of KLDE can be found in Smithers
(2002), link below. This is a version of KLDE that
incorporates the refinements identified in the designing a
font testing, and shows how KLDE can be used to better
identify and understand synthesis in designing. Another
common folk notion in design research.
Does this help?
Best regards,
Tim
