Recently, the European Science Foundation published a Discussion Paper
entitled 'Musicology (Re-) Mapped', to which I made a small
contribution. The PDF of the publication can be accessed at
http://www.esf.org/human. The paper presents an interesting, though not
necessarily complete, overview of European musicology today, including
several case studies, and proposes a number recommendations concerning a
formal mapping exercise of the discipline, network building,
interdisciplinarity and sustainability.
The paper demonstrates that musicology represents the interdisciplinary
paradigm in the humanities at its best. It makes a strong case for the
societal and economic importance of music and of music research. If you
need an authoritative reference about the importance of music research
for your grant application, here it is.
Enjoy (and cite)!
