*apologies for cross-posting*
I would like to set up a study group for researchers interested in the role of the senses in musicology (with 'the senses' here understood in socio-cultural terms and including, but not limited to, hearing). Although primarily aimed at musicologists the group will necessarily be interdisciplinary, welcoming scholars from other fields as well as composers/performers.
Discussion topics might include:
- The impact of a ‘hierarchy of the senses’ on musical scholarship
- The uses/limitations of empirical studies of sensory responses to music
- How might music scholars work with recent writings in sensory studies/sensory anthropology?
- Non-cochlear sound art
- Audio-visual interactions
- The materiality of sound
- Synasthesia
While I hope that we will eventually be able to meet up in person, to get the ball rolling I have set up a discussion list (via Google Groups) for anyone who is interested. Please email me ([log in to unmask]) if you would like to be added to the list.
Best wishes
Stacey
