the église primatiale Saint-Trophime in Arles <http://tinyurl.com/c59zrhb>
(note the similarity to representations of the baptism of Clovis!).

you for reminding me of how beautiful the sculptures of Saint-Trophime are!
especially after their "restoration" --the last time i saw them they were
black.
i assume that the medium here is either marble or very hard limestone, so it
can be divested of its thick black patina without any significant
deterioration of the surface of the stone --which looks as though it were
carved yesterday.
what a curious style that is --mixing a very "advanced" form of drapery
representation with quite "archaic" (or, perhaps, "archaising"?) heads and
eyes.
>The corbel you point out
corbel?
in what sense is that pilaster capital a "corbel"?
this

as is this

otOh,

is no more a "corbel" than the right face of

or, for that matter, the left face of

>> This probably only scratches the surface. And, of course, I'm not an art
historian.
> It undoubtedly only does scratch the surface, John, but there is no need for
you to apologize for not being an art historian!!
on the contrary, since the Hapless Planet is already groaning under the weight
of far too many Lawyers and Art Hysterians and clearly in need of some Serious
Culling.
