medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear List members,
I am trying to understand the relationship between four lists of monastic properties involving the abbey of Glanfeuil in the 12th c. Two appear to be forgeries created by the Monte Cassino historian-forger extraordinaire Peter the Deacon. Two others are papal privileges based on these lists. The issue was raised by Herbert Bloch in the second volume of his monumental Monte Cassino in the Middle Ages (pp. 980-1030).
I am having a very difficult time understanding the probable relationships between the two forged documents and the forged documents, the genuine lists of Glanfeuil property and the papal privileges.
Do any list members know of anyone who works on these sorts of problems?
thanks
John W.
