medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Herewith a link to an earlier (2010) 'Saints of the day' for 7. December (including St. Savinus of Spoleto; St. Urban of Teano; St. Ambrose of Milan; St. John the Silent; St. Fara):
http://tinyurl.com/br6kvuw
Further to Savinus of Spoleto:
In that earlier post's notice of this saint, the link to a view of the sarcophagus in Fusignano that once held his putative remains is not functioning at the moment. Use this instead:
http://tinyurl.com/d73d8e3
Further to Ambrose of Milan:
In that earlier post's notice of this saint, add after the link to the home page of Milan's basilica di Sant'Ambrogio this link to another illustrated, Italian-language page on this church:
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_di_Sant%27Ambrogio
and this link to an illustrated, English-language page on the same church:
http://www.sacred-destinations.com/italy/milan-sant-ambrogio
In the same notice, the fourth of the five links to 'Exterior views' of Milan's basilica di Sant'Ambrogio no longer functions in that way.
In the same notice, in the sections on 'Exterior details' and 'Interior details' of Milan's basilica di Sant'Ambrogio the comment about Italia nell'Arte Medievale being off-line happily is no longer accurate. The fourth and fifth links to views of 'Interior details' no longer function in that way.
In the same notice, a revised set of links to views of the putative Ambrose reposing between Sts. Gervasius and Protasius in the crypt of Milan's basilica di Sant'Ambrogio:

In the same notice, at item a) in 'Some images' add this link to another full-length view of Ambrose's restored fifth-century mosaic portrait in the basilica di Sant'Ambrogio's sacello di San Vittore:
http://www.atlantedellarteitaliana.it/immagine/00007/3858OP6466.jpg
In the same notice, the link to a detail view of that portrait no longer functions. Use this instead:

In the same notice, at item c) in 'Some images' for 'altar frontal' please read 'Golden Altar' (though it's called a _paliotto_ this object is an entire altar). A more conservative dating would be between 824 and 859 (the dates of the archbishop who commissioned this work). The altar was restored in 1966. Add this view of Ambrose blessing its maker, Magister Wolvinus (or Vuolvinus), as portrayed on a roundel on the altar's rear:

In the same notice, add after item h) in 'Some images' this link to a view of Ambrose as depicted in the mid- to slightly later twelfth-century mosaics of the Cappella Palatina in Palermo:
http://tinyurl.com/3s9uolg
In the same notice, at item r) in 'Some images', use instead this link to a better view of Ambrose (lower right corner) as depicted in Pietro di Puccio's restored late fourteenth-century mosaic around the rose window on the facade of the cathedral of Orvieto:

In the same notice, add after item s) in 'Some images' this link to a view of Ambrose as portrayed on a grosso agontano (a coin) of the Ambrosian Republic (1447-1450):
http://tinyurl.com/7ploamh
and this link to a view of Ambrose (at right; at left, St. Jerome) as depicted in one of the mid-fifteenth-century windows (1454) of the Beaucaire chapel in the cathedral of Bourges (photograph by Gordon Plumb):

and this link to a view of Ambrose (at far right) as depicted by Michael Pacher on his Fathers of the Church altarpiece (ca. 1483) in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich:

Further to Fara:
In that earlier post's notice of this saint, add to the link already provided to expandable views of the originally twelfth- to fifteenth-century église Sainte-Fare at Achères-la-Forêt (Seine-et-Marne) this link to three more expandable views thereof:
