these sacrificial victims for Christ from Matthew 2: 16-18.
hey, waddaminit.
how could those little guys be "legendary" (wholly or otherwise), if they are
in Matt 2:16-18?
is the Virgin Birth "wholly legendary"?
the Loaves & the Fishes?
the Resurrection?

frieze) on the central portal of the west facade, cathédrale Notre-Dame,

related (in style), but not "dependent upon" the Chartres work is the
much-abbreviated version of the Slaughter at Etampes
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FFqyCI4nmpo/SNu4vc_fQ8I/AAAAAAAAWRA/sMTvraMayqg/s901/Etampes%2C+frieze+%26+capitals+on+porch+L-+Herod+%26+Massacres+of+I.jpg
the "Etampes Master" was responsible for quite a few of the figures on the
capital frieze at Chartres --though not those of the Massacre scenes-- and
most likely left Chartres sometime in 1145 to go to Etampes (about 35 miles to
the east) to execute the "Royal Portal" on the collegial church of St. Mary,
which may well have been finished in time for the great council Louis VII held
there in early February of 1147 to settle his affairs before his departure on
the disastrous Second Crusade with his Main Squeeze, the loverly Eleanor.
if this Rank Speculation is correct, then "ca. 1145" is a pretty good
terminus
ante quem for the cap frieze work at Chartres (though perhaps not for the
tympana and archivolts above the capital level).
