Hello Rob
You might find something of interest on my blog
http://www.chronographics.blogspot.co.uk. My recent article for Design
Issues is currently free to download from the MIT Press site. Direct link to
the PDF (7.4MB):
http://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1162/DESI_a_00171.
It's important to differentiate representations of change, which as it were
accidentally represent time, from attempts to visualise time itself, such as
in timelines (and of course the huge number of quantitative visualisations
which map some variable as it alters over time).
Bethany Nowviskie has written interestingly from a Digital Humanities point
of view on representing time. Her 2004 PhD dissertation is on her site:
http://nowviskie.org/research/ I don't agree with everything she says, but
it seems to fit your call for "alternative temporalities in these visual
artworks, with theoretical insight".
I recently secured funding for a PhD student to work on timewise
visualisations of cultural data and am pleased to say that Florian Krautli
has started work within that studentship. His own very new blog called
YYYY-MM-DD is here: http://research.kraeutli.com/index.php/author/florian/
Good luck with your research.
Stephen

Subject: [PHD-DESIGN] Representations of Time
