Dear Rob,
One of the great graphic representations of a time series is Charles Joseph Minard's representation of Napoleon's invasion of Russia and his disastrous retreat. Edward Tufte reproduces on his web site:

Tufte's web site provides a larger version of the thumbnail with a good discussion of Minard's sources:

You'll find the full discussion in Tufte's book The Visual Display of Quantitative Information.
There have been many good replies to this query — and possibly some off-list. Once you gather them all, I'd be really grateful to have a post with the bibliography you've assembled and the URLs for useful web resources.
Best regards,
Ken

I'm researching how time is represented in photo-visuals (photographs and photo-composites) and in informational graphics - maps, timelines, data visualisations. Could anyone recommend books/papers on this topic? I'm specifically interested in the performance of alternative temporalities in these visual artworks, with theoretical insight.
