Dear colleagues;
I am trying to design a professional skill development workshop (and
then an undergraduate module) that aims to apply design tools,
concepts, and thinking to the world of careers and employability.
As youth unemployment reaches unprecedented levels around the world
especially in big cities such as London; I think resources and
perspectives of the design discipline can be used effectively to
empower young people in their preparation for the job market and in
their job application processes. That is the premise of my
goal/project.
I have actually started working on designing a session on 'dreaming
big dreams and pursuing them creatively and relentlessly' this
semester (you can find the details and video hyper-links at the blog
piece I have written here; http://bit.ly/UsE5kD - so please feel free
to use it for teaching.)
However, it seems I still have a long way to go - could you please
suggest me teaching and research resources in preparing such a
workshop/module on designing personal careers?
I have looked at what has been done before such as Rotman's business
design courses, Ayse Birsel's "Design the Life You Love" workshops
(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/linda-tischler/forget-new-years-resoluti_b_798710.html);
Harvard's "Design Thinking and Innovation" course by Professor
Srikant M. Datar (http://www.hbs.edu/coursecatalog/1345.html); and
Open University's distance course on "Design thinking: creativity for
the 21st century"
(http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/course/u101.htm).
Although such courses are good examples, most of them do not share
their methods and resources openly. I think more open educational
resources are necessary in this domain and I would love to work in
creating and designing such a repository.
I wonder if you have any suggestions and advice for me to progress?
I would also appreciate any articles, resources, web sites, exercises,
or examples that you might think of.
I would also love to meet potential collaborators who would be
interested in working with me in this domain for the longer term.
Thank you very much - this e-group and community is extremely
inspiring and developmental for me.
Sincerely;
Fahri
