PS: Early in John the Eleemosynary's Bios by Leontius of Neapolis one of Leontius' informants recounts how John recalled having experienced in his youth on Cyprus a vision of an exceptionally beautiful young woman garlanded in olive branches whom he correctly identified as Mercy. In the _Legenda aurea_'s chapter on John the narrative begins with a somewhat altered account of this vision that nonetheless preserves its essential visual elements. The reproductions of this vision as depicted in illuminated copies of the _Legenda aurea_ that I have been able quickly to find are relatively tiny and thus do not reveal details particularly well:
