medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
most books on the books.google site which are in the public domain are
downloadable for free (at least from a U.S. machine) --unless they have been
reprinted and, somehow, for some damned reason, the reprint publisher is able
(or thinks she is able) to impose a retroactive copyright on the original
publication.
the Googleistas, in their Wisdom, have done a pretty good job of hiding the
link which allows you to download the .pdf file.
it's hidden behind the little gear icon in the upper right corner, just above
the visible text of the book itself (why the gear icon? one might ask; why
not?)
if there is no "download pdf" in the pull down menu then, well, the book can't
be downloaded.
if you strike out on a book at books.google, try http://archive.org , which is
a kind of clearing house/meta index for books available on line for free. the
Googlers' site is soooo poorly indexed that i can frequently find something on
archive.org which i cannot find on books.google, even though the archive.org
copy came from books.google. go figger.
there is also
http://www.hathitrust.org/
and of course,
http://www.jstor.org
but both of those require a subscription.
and a bunch of other, more or less pirate sites which have (usually more
recent) books on them.
for older French books (and periodicals) there is of course the Bibliotheque
nationale site, http://gallica.fr
and for older French art history books there is the Institut National
d'Histoire de l'Art site,
http://www.inha.fr/
which has quite beautiful color .pdf copies of some classics in its
bibliothèque numérique.
my favorite there is the complete set of Bernard de Montfaucon's Les monumens
de la monarchie françoise --the beginning of medieval art history in France.
or at least it *was* my favorite book available there --it seems to have been
removed from the site.
there is a very special --and very deep-- level of hell reserved for the guy
who invented copyright.

Canada?) -- don't have to register with Google Books (at least, I didn't have
to). Clicking on <Preview this book> brings up the entire thing. Both the
table of contents and the index are fully hotlinked.

as I can make out, I have to register on GOOGLE and can then read the book for
free (as opposed to downloading it as a PDF file). Is this correct?

devotes its first chapter to medieval altars and the effort to replace wooden
ones with stone from 11 C onward. It's free on Google Books
(http://books.google.com/books?id=jkNLAAAAMAAJ&). I don't know about
continental Europe.
