Music Study Day at Christ Church, Oxford
Celebrating the completion of the online Catalogue of the Music collection
On Friday 2 November 2012, 10.30-17.00
Christ Church Blue Boar Lecture Theatre
Confirmed speakers include: Dr John Milsom, Professor Jonathan Cross, Professor Laurence Dreyfus, Professor Jonathan Wainwright, Dr Julia Craig McFeely, Matthew Phillips, Dr Warwick Edwards, Dr Rebecca Herrisone, Martin Holmes, Dr Alan Howard and Dr Magnus Williamson.
The day will close with an invitation to the Upper Library (c.17.00), where there will be an exhibition of items drawn from the Christ Church music collection.
In 2011 the Online Catalogue of the Music Collection at Christ Church was completed in outline form (http://library.chch.ox.ac.uk/music/). The aim of this Study Day is to ponder the Christ Church project from the points of view of those who will use the finished resource and at the same time to look ahead to equivalent projects that are planned for other UK music collections, such as the Music School collection at the Bodleian, the Durham Cathedral manuscripts, and the Wode Partbooks of c. 1560 (which are now dispersed between four different library locations).
The day will be informal, with ample time for exchange of views. Speakers will give short presentations about their interests in the collections and projects mentioned above, or projects that might link to them (such as a database of music copyists’ scribal hands, or catalogues of genres rather than collections). We have invited speakers representing a wide spectrum of interests, from researchers and performers to librarians and project managers, in the hope of stimulating constructive conversation about both the creation and the uses of new online resources.
