well, Anna, it was probably only NewNews to Out of Touch Ivory Tower types
like George and me. (i don't know what excuse you could possibly have.)
who knows, the things might have been up there since the Dawn of the Age of
The Innernets.

don't neglect the papers given at the Suger - St. Denis symposium, Al.

i think that that one might stand up in the future as a real Historiographic
Watershed in the study of "Early Gothic" --there may have been earlier Nails
driven into the Dionysian Coffin, but those papers certainly were the first
ones that i became aware of.
how about it, Jim?
do you know of any significant previous work which aimed at deposing St. Suger
as the sole Inventor of Gothic Architecture?
the only thing which i can think of off hand which had a similar somewhat
revolutionary effect might be Robert Fawtier's "The Capetian Kings of France"
http://tinyurl.com/8plyrs7
the early chapters of which revolutionized the concept of Philip I as a lazy,
inept, lecherous, gluttonous and totally ineffective monarch --in large part
because he lacked the Good Press which Suger (of all people) supplied for his
son, Fat Louis.
in much the same way, there can be no doubt that Suger's very effective
Blowing of His Own Horn was largely (though perhaps not entirely) responsible
for what became the Received Wisdom that he single handedly Sucked the Gothic
Style right out of his Own Fingers.
and, to my knowledge, the Met symposium put the first pin in that particularly
persistent Balloon.
