medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I would expect something Greek too [μεταξαβλάττα
(παννίον, σάβανον, λινοβέντος, τζάχα, χαρέριον &c.)
τῆς τιμῆς ?] - whence "cloth of honor" ? Is it an ex-
pression invented by English speaking art historians ?

Jim and Sharon,
Thank you both for your responses to my query! And what a wonderful
expression. I was expecting something Greek, but "cloth of honor" will be
much better for my friend's audience.
Best,
John

Generally speaking, it is referred to as a "cloth of honor."

A friend who is not on the list is writing about Duccio de Buoninsegna's
Maesta, which depicts the Virgin and Child and six angels. Mary is seated in
front of what appears to be a red drapery, and a similar background appear
in at least one other Madonna and Child by Duccio. My friend wants to know
what the drapery is called.
Here's a photo of the Maesta: <

Here's another from the Kunstmuseum Bern. It includes a recorded description
that refers to the material as "red brocade" but doesn't identify the
object.

Thanks for any help,
