Many thanks for such helpful responses to my query regarding Agnes Blannbekin. It has been lovely to receive such a warm welcome.

If any one knows anything about Solomon as a magician, could they also tell
me if there is any legend of a (magic ?) purse which became useless when it
got a hole in it. I've a 12th C ref I cannot gloss.

There is the old (1960s) translation by Ira Ragusa which, though out of print, can still be obtained in some places. Of course the translation is not based on the critical edition.

Colleagues,

A friend of mine has inquired whether there exists an English translation of Ludolf of Saxony's Life of Christ, apart from that found in McGrath's book of readings. I have turned up nothing in WorldCat. Does anyone know of another translation?

Thank you in advance,

Subject: Feasts and Saints of the Day: October 16

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Herewith a link to an earlier (2010) 'Saints of the day' for 16. October (including St. Longinus the Soldier; St. Gall; St. Lullus; St. Bertrand of Comminges; St. Hedwig of Silesia):
http://tinyurl.com/9n7vb4x

Further to Longinus the Soldier:

Further images of Christ being pierced with a lance may be found on these pages of Genevra Kornbluth's Historical Archive:
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/Crucifixion1.html
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/Crucifixion2.html

In that earlier post's notice of this saint, at item h) in 'Some portrayals' for 'L. (right rear, behind St. John) as depicted in an earlier thirteenth-century fresco (1209) in the nave of the church of the Presentation of the Theotokos in the Studenica monastery' please read 'L. (right rear, behind St. John) as depicted in the earlier thirteenth-century frescoes (1208-1209; repainted in 1569) in the nave of the church of the Theotokos in the Studenica monastery'. The sixteenth-century repainting of these frescoes appears to have been studiously conservative at least in regard to the figures' dress.

In the same notice, add between items h) and i) in 'Some portrayals':
L. as depicted in a later thirteenth-century fresco (ca. 1260) in the church of the Panagia Mavriotissa in Kastoria (Kastoria prefecture) in northwestern Greece:
http://tinyurl.com/8orfzm3

In the same notice, add between items j) and k) in 'Some portrayals':
L. as depicted (at right, behind St. John) in a Crucifixion scene in the frescoes of ca. 1300 (or, perhaps, ca. 1290) attributed to Manuel Panselinos in the Protaton church on Mt. Athos:
http://tinyurl.com/d9vsek2
and:
L.'s martyrdom (lower register at right; at left in the same register, St. Sabinus of Catania and, in the water, St. Lucian of Antioch) as depicted in an October calendar composition in the earlier fourteenth-century frescoes (betw. 1313 and 1318; conservation work in 1968) by Michael Astrapas and Eutychios in the church of St. George at Staro Nagoričane in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia:
http://tinyurl.com/6prpqxr

In the same notice, at item m) in 'Some portrayals' none of the links to L. as depicted in the Crucifixion scene in the dome of the church of the Holy Ascension at the Visoki Dečani monastery still functions. Use this instead for the general view (L. at far right, nimbed):
http://tinyurl.com/9cu7r6q
and these for the detail views:
http://tinyurl.com/9dcjq7v
http://tinyurl.com/8zboe28

In the same notice, the second and third links to views of the Holy Lance in Vienna no longer function.

Further to Lullus:

In that earlier post's notice of this saint, the first link to views of the ruin of abbey church at Bad Hersfeld no longer functions. Use this instead:
http://tinyurl.com/c9ouvdu

Further to Hedwig of Silesia:

In that earlier post's notice of this saint, the third link to views of her chapel and tomb in the abbey church at Trebnitz / Trzebnica no longer functions.

In the same notice, the first two links to views of altar panels from ca. 1430 showing scenes of H., now in the National Museum in Warsaw, no longer function.

Best,
John Dillon

You might direct your student to the volume of essays from a London
symposium on medieval seals, which will lead him to the literature on
reuse of "Abrasax" amulets in seal matrices. Solomon is a popular
subject on those amulets precisely because of his reputation as a
magician. While the matrices reusing the stones are post-eleventh
century, most of the gems themselves date from the sixth century or
before. Some members of the corpus have been found in England; can't
remember whether any of those feature Solomon. For that, see Martin
Henig's volume on gems found in England.

special issues on teaching Chaucer, women, history and literature,
rhetoric, medieval noise, and Jewish medieval studies and literary

Subject: Manuscript sources for Agnes Blannbekin

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Hello,

I am new to this list, so allow me to introduce myself. I am a first year
PhD student in medieval history at the University of Nottingham, under the
supervision of Rob Lutton and Ross Balzaretti. For my thesis I am
researching the use of medical theory and language in religious texts in the
later medieval period. So far this has been especially noticeable in texts
of female mystics in descriptions of their bodily experiences. At the moment
I am particularly interested in Agnes Blannbekin, whose blood apparently
boils as a result of her religious devotion. I have begun with Ulrike
Wiethaus' excellent modern English edition, and I am now interested in
tracking down some original manuscript sources.

As far as I am aware, only fragmentary copies exist in manuscript form
(although how fragmentary they are, I have been unable to ascertain).
Otherwise, I have heard of the print edition compiled the Benedictine
scholar Bernhard Pez in the 1700s, but I have been able to find out very
little about this edition. Was it based on an earlier print copy, or
compiled from manuscript fragments? I have seen it referred to as a
'censored' edition of the text, but I have not been able to find out much
detail on what exactly has been 'censored'.

If would be very grateful for guidance on what material, if any, is out
there!

Many thanks,

Rebecca Maryan

hi Rebecca,

welcome to the list.

you may not be aware, but this level of Devotion is also one of the necessary
qualifications for full list membership --at least for new members (older ones
are "grandfathered in").

some find this condition to be rather uncomfortable, but i can assure you that
everyone here will definitely Feel Your Pain, so Persevere.

who knows?

maybe actually reading a copy of it will help to find out.

do let us know the answers to those fascinating questions.

Dear Laura,

The Victoria and Albert has copies from 1904 to 1914, and (as 'nuova serie') from 1986 onward. I believe your publication -- "Registro degli archivi bassanesi" -- appears in the issues published from 1908 to 1914, so you should be in luck.

Worldcat shows copies no copies in the UK, but some in the US (Harvard,
Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY Public Library, Univ of Pennsylvania);
Germany, France, and Italy. And there's even a copy being offered on ABE
(the 2009 volume).

But the Karlsruhe Virtueller Katalog, accessing COPAC, shows a copy (only of
the "nuova series", but complete for that) at the V&A.

Dear Rebecca,

Welcome to the listserv!

If you have not yet checked the facing-page Latin and German edition, you should. I don't have a copy handy and I can't remember whether it lists all of the manuscript sources, but I would be surprised if it did not. I believe it was edited from a manuscript now in Vienna?

Dinzelbacher, Peter, and Renate Vogeler. 1994. Leben und Offenbarungen der Wiener Begine Agnes Blannbekin (1315). Göppingen: Künnerle.

ISBN:   3874526437<http://laurel.lso.missouri.edu/search/i?3874526437&startLimit=&endLimit=> 9783874526432<http://laurel.lso.missouri.edu/search/i?9783874526432&startLimit=&endLimit=>
OCLC Number: 31131050

The main censoring in the Pez edition, from what I recall, was editing out Agnes' experience of swallowing Christ's foreskin, and editing out a few passages describing visions of purgatory, all of which went against contemporary Post-Tridentine theology.

In general, if you are hunting German-language manuscripts, http://www.handschriftencensus.de/werke is a wonderful resource, and with any German-region author you should consult theDie deutsche Literatur des Mittelalters: Verfasserlexikon, which often (but not consistently) lists all known manuscript copies. I confess I haven't checked the entry on Agnes, but I assume that there is one and that it will be of use.

I'm glad that Agnes Blannbekin is getting more attention! best of luck tracking the manuscripts down,

-Rabia

> Hello,
>
> I am new to this list, so allow me to introduce myself. I am a first year PhD student in medieval history at the University of Nottingham, under the supervision of Rob Lutton and Ross Balzaretti. For my thesis I am researching the use of medical theory and language in religious texts in the later medieval period. So far this has been especially noticeable in texts of female mystics in descriptions of their bodily experiences. At the moment I am particularly interested in Agnes Blannbekin, whose blood apparently boils as a result of her religious devotion. I have begun with Ulrike Wiethaus’ excellent modern English edition, and I am now interested in tracking down some original manuscript sources.
>
> As far as I am aware, only fragmentary copies exist in manuscript form (although how fragmentary they are, I have been unable to ascertain). Otherwise, I have heard of the print edition compiled the Benedictine scholar Bernhard Pez in the 1700s, but I have been able to find out very little about this edition. Was it based on an earlier print copy, or compiled from manuscript fragments? I have seen it referred to as a ‘censored’ edition of the text, but I have not been able to find out much detail on what exactly has been ‘censored’.

Regarding Ludolf of Saxony and the Meditaciones vitae Christi... it should be obvious to the cognoscendi that I misread the question about Ludolf's text for the text of the same name attributed to John de Caulibus.

Thank you in advance,

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

A friend who is not on the list is writing about Duccio de Buoninsegna's Maesta, which depicts the Virgin and Child and six angels. Mary is seated in front of what appears to be a red drapery, and a similar background appear in at least one other Madonna and Child by Duccio. My friend wants to know what the drapery is called.

Here's a photo of the Maesta: <http://www.ducciodibuoninsegna.org/Maesta-1288-1300.html>

Here's another from the Kunstmuseum Bern. It includes a recorded description that refers to the material as "red brocade" but doesn't identify the object.

John,
Such draperies displayed behind enthroned figures are usually referred to generically as cloths of honour.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear all,

Sadly, on the day we learn about Lynn's passing, we also learn that Maria
Rosa Menocal, of Yale, died yesterday.

http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2012/oct/16/sterling-professor-menocal-passes-away/

I'm so sad to learn of this. I invited her here in 2008 to speak at a
conference, and she was a wonderfully engaging presenter. I last saw and
chatted with her at the Medieval Academy last year in Saint Louis. I knew
she was battling cancer, but find myself nonetheless shocked to learn that
it won. She seemed so well in March.

For those who don't know her work, Maria taught Spanish and Portuguese at
Yale, worked mostly only medieval Spain, and among her many writings was
the popular (in that it is widely read outside of academe), *The Ornament
of the World*.
