Whereas these saints' entries in the Syriac Martyrology and in the (pseudo-)Hieronymian Martyrology state that they were martyrs of Hierapolis in Phrygia, they do not further specify which Hierapolis in Phrygia is meant. Usually such a reference is to the larger of the two, the one near Laodicea in what after the late third-century division of Phrygia came to be called Phrygia Pacatiana (or Phrygia Prima). That city's modern successor is Pamukkale in southwestern Turkey's Denizli province and the nearby ancient ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of these date from after a major earthquake in the first century and so, albeit in considerably better shape, will have formed part of the urban fabric in the time of Cyriac and Claudian.
