Dear list members,
I am working in my dissertation and one stage consists of a design practice project. My goal is to create design objects that will serve as instruments for fieldwork. I am reflecting on my activities while I am designing. One of my objectives is to report these reflections.
The design practice project is about a mobile web app for obesity prevention. I decided to use jQuery Mobile (http://jquerymobile.com/), which is a ‘framework’ that facilitates coding, helps with productivity, and assures cross-platform compatibility. Using the framework means that I am limited to use some graphic elements such as buttons, check boxes, menus, etc. that are ‘pre-designed’ in the framework. Though one can theme them.
I see that there are more critical issues, or higher level issues in the design project such as conceptual design, interaction design, or visual persuasion. Yet, I keep wondering about these pre-defined visual elements.
I would like to know your thoughts about these questions:
Is the automation of the creation of some visual elements acceptable in design?
Does the use of frameworks like jQuery Mobile reduce the creativity and design quality of the outcome?
Thanks!
