Thanks, all. So this GCSE rule applies to all subjects and all awarding bodies? A few more questions...
1. How do you manage the intake from schools - is it just a case of asking the learner pre-enrolment at college about the number of attempts?
2. Does the rule only apply to one awarding body and spec at a time or do ABs share entry information so you cannot mix and match?
THANKS!

It is not different from other GCSEs just more commonly taken. AQA indicate the number of attempts per module in the manual.
It doesn't help if you take students from schools who are resitting and don't know what they have taken and when.

Hi Elaine,
We were in this position last year, we didn’t realise that the Maths students could only have 2 attempts at their units and found out from an AQA letter. As we are aware now we obviously have advised staff but for the few students we had last year we simply had to refund them their re-sits fees, apologise and withdraw their entry. It is a bit of a pain and why is Maths different to all the other subjects?!
Many Thanks
Rachel

Subject: GCSEs
Hi all,
I really appreciate you as a place to go for advice as well as factual stuff. I turn to you now for the latter as I fear I’ve missed something HUGE with GCSEs – since when were the number of attempts at GCSE units limited and how come I’m only coming across it now? (being blond is not an option however being a complete failure perhaps is) We’ve got learners’ entries for unit 1 (AQA) GCSE Maths (4307 spec) this Nov series being rejected as they have already attempted it twice. Their attempts were done at school I’ve since discovered.
Should I have warned faculty staff about this? Argh!
What do you guys do to overcome this problem?
