Dear all,
At Claro Partners- a research and innovation company based in Barcelona, Spain- we are organising a Symposium that might be of interest to members of the group.
On 12-13 October we are organising a Symposium, here in Barcelona, to investigate the scope, challenges and future potential of the expanding Informal Economy.
We see “the informal economy” as a short-hand for a lot of different under-the-radar, non-recognised, untracked, unsanctioned and disregarded but very real and substantial commercial activities that are taking place all around the world, in both emerging and developed markets. It is the fastest growing sector of both emerging and developed markets, and in fact, the global informal sector has been growing even in the face of economic recession.
With this symposium, we will abandon the conventional thinkingthat the informal economy is the "other economy" (underground, black, shadow, etc) and instead explore its expanding socio-economicvalue and the possibilities for established business to meaningfullycollaborate and participate. You can get a better idea of our point ofview through the symposium website www.theinformaleconomy.com.
Confirmed speakers include: Keith Hart (anthropologist who launchedthe study of Informal Economy), John Thackara (author of The Buble: Designing in a Complex World and director of Doors of Perception), Niti Bhan (Head of emerging markets atExperentia and Founder of Emerging Future Labs), Alexa Clay (author ofMisfit Economy), Scott Smith (founder of Changeist), Steve Daniels(researcher at IBM, editor-in-chief of Makeshift Magazine), RichardTyson (Principal at Caerus Associates, a firm focused on frontierenvironments), Timothy Brown (expert on Shanzhai products) and otherswho are deeply engaged in the redefinition of this topic from both asocial and business perspective.
The symposium will be followed by a day of workshops run by Alexa Clay and John Thackara. Details of the program can again be seen on the symposium website: http://www.theinformaleconomy.com/symposium/program-2/
Registrations to the symposium and the workshops are now open. We hope to see you in Barcelona and please feel free to spread the news.
Best wishes,
Gunes
