Position Summary
The School of Design and Human Environment at Oregon State University invites applications for a full time (1.0 FTE), nine month tenure-track Instructor in Design Foundations to begin September 2013. Successful candidates will join a faculty team to develop and teach foundation courses in design to both majors and non-majors. Successful candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to contemporary pedagogy for Design Foundation education with teaching and research/scholarship interests in one or more of the following areas: design pedagogy, design thinking, or design foundation education. Salary is competitive and commensurate with education, credentials, and experience. Employee benefits are excellent.

School: The School of Design and Human Environment offers undergraduate programs in Interior Design, Apparel Design, Graphic Design, and Merchandising Management and graduate degrees (MA, MS, PhD) in Design and Human Environment. The School is the only professional program in the western US to offer BS through PhD degrees in these specializations. The School has approximately 700 undergraduate majors and 39 graduate students. The School’s research/scholarship signature research areas include: 1) design in apparel, interiors, graphics, and housing and 2) consumer/user behavior related to the designed environments. The School works with an Advisory Board whose members include representatives from companies in the interior design, graphic design, housing, apparel design, and retailing industries. School resources include apparel, graphic, and interior design studios, computer lab, textile labs, and ethnic/historic textiles and apparel collection. Position Duties:
75% Teaching/Advising: Provide leadership for and oversight of the core Design Foundations courses required of all undergraduate majors in the SDHE; develop core design/visual literacy courses for the Baccalaureate Core (general education); teach 2-3 courses per quarter.

15% Research/Creative Activity: development/expansion of a nationally recognized scholarly program. Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and other publication forms and/or exhibit creative scholarship in juried exhibitions and disseminate scholarly work at professional meetings.

10% Service: participate actively as a member of the university community and one’s professional community including administrative committees, search committees, and university governance activities. Service may include duties related to the Design Foundations program.

Qualifications:
Required

  *   Earned terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in Apparel Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Merchandising Management, Architecture or related field by date of employment
  *   Record of achievement or evidence of potential in teaching and research/scholarly work
  *   Demonstrated ability to contribute to team endeavors
  *   Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats
  *   Demonstrated ability to utilize professional subject-related technology for teaching and/or scholarly work
  *   Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity

Preferred

  *   Record of publication/creative activity and/or external funding support
  *   Industry experience or professional practice
  *   Demonstrated ability to establish effective university and/or industry relationships.
  *   Record of active participation in professional and/or academic organizations

Scholarly Outcomes for Position
15% Research-scholarly performance will be demonstrated publishing research in peer-reviewed journals and other publication forms and/or exhibit creative scholarship in juried exhibitions and disseminating scholarly work at professional meetings.
