I have been informed of the proposal to construct a sewer line near
Siccar Point. The magnificent exposure of an angular unconformity at
Siccar Point may be said to have launched geology as a modern science
due to the shrewd insight of James Hutton. It should be recognized
for its worldwide importance for its place in scientific history in
the same way that a site like Stonehenge is for human history. It
would be a shame to despoil it by having a sewer outfall so near to
it. I daresay there isn't a beginning geology class in the world that
is not acquainted with the exposure at Siccar Point and its role in
developing an understanding of earth history.
