Dear Esra,
I hope Prof Bernhard won't mind if I add a little detail to
his nice reply, with which I agree.
From my copy:
Vitruvius The Ten Books on Architecture,
Translated by Morris Hicky Morgan
Dover Publications, Inc, New York, 1960
An edition based on the original Morris Hicky Morgan
translation published by Harvard University Press in 1914.
You can find a PDF of this HUP edition here
<http://academics.triton.edu/faculty/fheitzman/Vitruvius__the_Ten_Books_on_Architecture.pdf>
but I'm not sure how legal this is.
From the blurb on back cover of my Dover edition, we have that
Marcus Vitruvius Pollio was a Roman architect and engineer who
worked in the first century BC, and was the author of the
oldest "and most influential" work on architecture in
existence.
It's a good read, this book, for all kinds of designers, not
just architects. Just to give you a taste, from Paragraph 1,
Chapter 1: The Education of the Architect:
"The Architect should be equipped with knowledge of many
branches of study and varied kinds of learning, for it is by
his [sic] judgement that all work done by the other arts is
put to test. This knowledge is the child of practice and
theory. Practice is the continuous and regular exercise of
employment where manual work is done with any necessary
material according to the design of a drawing. Theory, on
the other hand, is the ability to demonstrate and explain
the productions of dexterity on the principles of
proportion."
I've always liked this phrase "productions of dexterity."
Best regards,
Tim
