Hi Juliana,
Good idea! There is clearly a role for such an event aggregation website as
you suggest. Perhaps better still, as Fil suggests, as a an aggregator of
aggregators website?
For two years I ran a similar website called www.allaboutdesignresearch.com
I created it to provide a pro-bono service for design researchers to
publicise whatever they wished, and to test some ideas for the Design
Research Society website.
On www.allaboutdesignresearch.com anyone could post their events, job
vacancies, call for papers, and news (or whatever). It also contained as
many useful online design research resources and videos as I could find.
www.allaboutdesignresearch.com was created using Joomla 1.0.x and used the
Purity template. It ran on RackSpace and took less than a day to design
and create. You can see the idea on a similar (but more limited) website
at www.anzsys.org
The site was successful. The numbers of page views, unique visitors,
revisits and time per page were high and internationally well distributed. I
don't have the figures at my fingertips but could probably find them if you
need them. I remember the numbers were ten times or more those of similar
websites.
For what it's worth, the lessons learned were:
1. Mostly, it's possible to run such a website in a relatively open manner.
I was surprised by how little problem occurred with posts.
2. If I were to do it again, I would probably a) use a standard form for
the opening line of posts; and b) some automated calendar software.
3. From experience, I would allocate most of my time to ensuring the website
was secure.
During the two years it was in existence, www.allaboutdesignresearch.com was
successful. It was, however, attacked seriously 3 times as well as
thousands of daily code injection attacks by automated scripts . The last
serious attack on the website occurred at a time when I was under time
pressure on other projects and for a number of reasons I decided not to
continue www.allaboutdesignresearch.com .
Good luck! Let me know if there is info from allaboutdesignresearch that
might be useful to you.
Best wishes,
Terence

I want to build a database on design events over the globe, and would like
your help in this task. The idea is that those of you interested would send
me the info of local events you know or that are important to you and i
would make a compendium and email it back to you through the list. If you
know other compendiums available it would also be helpfull.
Thanks to all.
