I agree with Lindsey, a rational decision based on the reasons he has
articulated. I attach Best Practice in Vaccination guidance by the RCN, it's
quite old now so there may be an updated version on their website and also
guidance on PGD's.

Karen

Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] B12 injection
Hi all
I must admit I'm swimming against the tide a bit here. One thing this list
constantly highlights is that OH is a pretty broad church. For many of my
clients such an arrangement would be completely inappropriate. I go
infrequently on a demand led basis, have no office base as such or the area
that I do use is not suitable. Others I visit on a regular basis but still
use a room that would not be appropriate.
However, I have a couple of clients where my base is perfectly adequate. I
also give injections and take bloods for other reasons and have
refrigeration and sharps disposal etc all sorted. I would agree with Diane
that a PGD is probably not required. The drug has already been prescribed
and supplied. I would be using my skills as a nurse to administer and
provided I am competent and well practiced in those skills and up to date in
my knowledge, then the only thing stopping me is whether I have available
time and my view of what occupational health is or isn't. If I have the
time (this can only take a few minutes) and my view is that my prime role
(within my code of conduct, professional and ethical responsibility etc) is
to help keep the employees of the company that is paying my fee in work,
then why not?
Why not treat this as a reasonable adjustments in the same way as any other.
If the facilities, competencies and agreements of all concerned are all in
place then surely it is reasonable. If one or more of these things isn't in
place, then it becomes unreasonable and you consider other options.
I would firstly want to pass this by the employer - obviously with the
employees permission - so they knew I was providing this service in their
time. I would also probably want the employees GP to know that I was doing
this as it feels appropriate that the prescriber knows who the administrator
is. I agree that the best option would be self administration but we all
know there are some for whom this just isn't going to work.
So to answer the ultimate question; would I do it? In a few situations,
probably yes.

I respectfully Don't know your skills/ competence or set up at the OH dept
Libby so forgive me!... But agree with everyone else: if this came to me
answer is no and will stay no:
-not primary care service
-therefore not OH remit
-Professional code of conduct issues
-sharps disposal issues (if not set up for this)
Etc etc
Sounds like another example of inheriting a previous OHA's customs and
practices. Suggest that was what that nurse was prepared to do but not you.

something? Is there a legitimate way I could give her the jab?
