The School of Arts, Design and Architecture, The Department of Film, Television and Scenography (ELO) in Aalto University

LECTURER IN DIGITAL DESIGN METHODS IN FILM, TELEVISION AND THEATRE
The successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed 5-year term on the Aalto University lecturer track. The position will begin on January or February 2013 or as agreed.

The successful candidate will teach computer-aided design methods, drawing and modeling software and different forms and presentation techniques for digital visualization, as well as digital design methods in film, television and theatre. S/he will participate in the planning and development of teaching, and in the delivery of courses, in close cooperation with other teaching staff within the Degree Programme in Scenography and Degree Programme in Film and Television, with the Theatre Academy Helsinki, as well as with MediaLab and Media Centre Lume at Aalto University. Depending on the expertise and strengths of the candidate s/he will in part teach the courses, and in part act as the coordinator of courses, being responsible for, e.g. schedules and inviting visiting teachers, while also planning the annual schedule and resourcing for his/her field of teaching. S/he is also expected to, among other things, guide students and participate in the student selection process. Most of the teaching within the Degree Programme in Scenography is given in small groups in the form of lectures, courses, practical assignments, workshops and productions.
Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. Teaching staff belongs to a total working hour system (1600 hours per year).
Requirements

The candidate is expected to have at least a master´s degree, experience in using digital methods in the field of film, television, theatre and/or new media, and knowledge of the working processes of a visual designer. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to have the artistic merits required for the exercise of the duties, excellent teaching skills, and good cooperation skills. Knowledge of the field of scenography and virtual set design, interest in developing teaching in cooperation with partners in the field, and diverse language skills are considered assets.

The applications should be addressed to the Dean of the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, including following materials: a curriculum vitae (including publications, if any), artistic portfolio (max 10 pages / 20 MB), description of teaching merits and your views regarding teaching (for example a teaching portfolio, max 4 pages) and description of your views regarding the present situation and the future development of the field of teaching of this lecturer position (max 2 pages). The material must be in English. The departmental committee reserves the right to ask additional material from the applicants.

Electronic documents should be submitted in PDF format and the file names should follow the format lastname_digital.pdf (e.g. lastname_digital_1.pdf). Application process
The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following areas: proficiency of the field of teaching, artistic merits, teaching skills, cooperation skills and activity in artistic or academic community. From amongst the applicants, the Departmental Committee will choose the ones who will be asked to visit the School and to give a teaching demonstration. They will also be interviewed by the Departmental Committee. In addition, the Departmental Committee may obtain reviews from external experts.
Aalto University reserves the right for justified reasons to leave the position open, to extend the application period and to consider candidates who have not submitted applications during the application period. The application materials will not be returned.

Language requirements
Applicants are required to have a good oral and written command of English as is required for the exercise of the duties.
Language requirements for native Finnish citizens
Native Finnish citizens in teaching and research positions at universities are required to have good command of the language of instruction, Finnish or Swedish, used on their courses. Those in teaching and research positions at universities which offer degrees in both Finnish and Swedish are also required to have at least satisfactory oral and written proficiency in the other official language of Finland.
Foreigners and non-native Finnish citizens may be appointed notwithstanding the provisions pertaining to teachers', researchers' and officials' requisite proficiency in Finnish and Swedish.
The applicant is deemed to be sufficiently proficient in Finnish if he or she has demonstrated excellent oral and written proficiency in Finnish as defined in the decree on the requisite proficiency of Finnish and Swedish of State civil servants (481/2003) or

· has demonstrated excellent command of written and oral Finnish in an examination by the Language Examination Board set by the National Board of Education or

· has received his or her basic education in Finnish or taken a maturity test at a higher education institution;

· has taken the Finnish matriculation examination with at least the grade of magna cum laude approbatur in the required Finnish examination

· has taken the Finnish matriculation examination with at least the grade of eximia cum laude approbatur in its 'Finnish as a second language' examination. 'Finnish as a second language' is an examination for foreigners, substituting the Finnish examination.
The applicant is deemed capable of understanding Swedish if he or she

· has demonstrated at least satisfactory ability to understand oral and written Swedish as provided in the decree on the requisite proficiency in Finnish and Swedish of State civil servants (481/2003);

· has, according to a certificate issued by the language examination board of some Finnish university, or by a member thereof, adequate command of written and spoken Swedish.
The Department of Film, Television and Scenography
The position is located in ELO, the Department of Film, Television and Scenography, see http://elo.aalto.fi/en/. ELO consists of two degree programmes: film and television, and scenography. The Degree Programme in Film and Television provides teaching in seven areas of specialization: directing, screenwriting, film and television producing, film editing, cinematography, sound design, and documentary film-making. The Degree Programme in Scenography offers three areas of specialization: production design, scenography and costume design. In addition, the Department provides teaching in the history of the cinema and courses in development of research skills. The Department collaborates closely with the Theatre Academy Helsinki and with other higher education institutions specialized in arts, as well as with polytechnics specialized in the audio-visual field. The open position is administered by the Degree Programme in Scenography.
The Degree Programme in Scenography trains the students in the artistic practices, skills and knowledge needed in scenography through workshops, theory courses and practical assignments. The Degree Programme in Scenography educates visionary artists for the fields of scenography and costume design, providing them with the necessary tools - methods and skills - to realize their art in their own style.
The Department of Film, Television and Scenography provides an opportunity for pursuing doctoral degrees which include artistic elements. Issues arising from the artistic, aesthetic-philosophical or technical aspects of film-making or its production and scenography are at the heart of the people-centered research of the Department. Contacts with international higher education institutions and universities in the field of arts engaged in similar research of TV, film and scenography are an essential part of the research activities of the Department.
