Gamut, the Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic, is
pleased to announce the publication of vol. 5/1 (2012). It is fully
accessible, free of charge, at <http://trace.tennessee.edu/gamut/>.
With this issue, Gamut moves to a twice-a-year format. Vol. 5/2 will
follow in a few months, and beginning in 2013 we will aim for roughly an
April-October publication schedule.
This issue begins with a tribute to Carl Wiens, our reviews editor, who
died this past March. Remembrances were contributed by Andrew Mead, Karl
Braunschweig, Gregory Marion, and David Sommerville.
Four articles follow, exploring a wide range of subjects:
Agency and the Adagio: Mimetic Engagement in Barber's Op. 11 Quartet
by Matthew Baileyshea
Disciplining Knowledge in Music Theory: Abstraction and the Recovery of
Dialectics
by Karl D. Braunschweig
Svetlana Kurbatskaya on Serial Music: Twelve Categories of "Twelve-Toneness"
by Zachary Cairns
Canonic Threads and Large-Scale Structure in Canons
by Alan Gosman
The serialized Festschrift for Allen Forte, which has been a feature of
recent issues (when we were on a once-per-year schedule) will resume in
vol. 5/2.
Sincerely,
David Carson Berry, Editor
