Colleagues – this is a call for submissions to a session at the upcoming Fall Meeting of AGU. We hope that it will be of interest to a good number of you and that you will consider contributing an abstract.
T038: Reactivation and Inversion of Rifted Margins: Implications for Mountain Belt Formation
Mountain belts are deformed products of plate convergence resulting from the collision of conjugate rifted margins. In the light of recent discoveries in present-day rifted margins (the hyper-extended domain with exhumed subcontinental mantle in the ocean-continent transition), this session aims to investigate the control of rift-related heterogeneities for the reactivation and inversion of rifted margins. We aim to bring together examples from reactivated present-day margins and from onshore relics of rifted margins now caught up in mountain belts and ancient orogens. We hope to emphasize cross-disciplinary studies linking contributions from geophysics, structural and field studies, tectonics. Numerical models of reactivation processes are welcomed.
Conveners are: Geoffroy Mohn, Gianreto Manatschal, Marco Beltrando and Rob Butler
Session at AGU Fall Meeting – 3-7 December in San Francisco
