Dear Don (and Amanda),
Thanks for these suggestions. Not being a list-owner, configuring the
list software to improve list functions is outside my range of action
-- though Keith Russell and David Durling might consider it. I've used
the robust and user-friendly Listserv software for nearly twenty years
now, and I haven't found it that tough. If new versions of Listserv
permit improvements, that would be great.
The filter prohibiting attachments was put in place for a reason. The
list will send attachments, but they only reach post-by-post format
subscribers. The software creates a problem for those who subscribe in
digest format. It transforms attachments into code that occupies
massive blocks of the digest. Large attachments turn into screen after
screen of code, requiring digest subscribers to scroll for long
distances to reach the next post. If this has changed, allowing the
digest to transport attachments, then it should be possible to remove
the filter.
Is there a way for Listserv to correct the reply problem? It's been my
assumption that replies are managed by the email systems of those who
post the reply. If there is a Listserv workaround, I'd welcome it.
But it is "poor Ken" and not "angry Ken." I'm more puzzled and
exasperated than angry. When people inform the list that they wish to
unsub, I send a "how to unsub message" as a public service reminder.
As for requests that people trim increasingly long tails to select for
the information to which they respond, that's a bit like reminding
people to take their boots off when they come in from the snow rather
than track mud on the floors and carpets.
Warm wishes from a user who appreciates the good services of a user advocate!
Ken
