"I noticed a few years ago that I subconciously found it much harder
to take female collegues seriously on days that they were wearing makeup
than on days they weren't."
If this discussion had been last week I would have said I really
haven't experienced any issues with being taken seriously as a women
in science. However I recently left my little Cambridge bubble to go
to my first major conference. I was presenting a poster which
attracted a fair amount of interest. On expressing how pleased I was
with it to a senior female scientist she suggested it was probably
because of what I look like. I was surprised to hear this from a
fellow woman. Also a male PI felt it appropriate to come to me
afterwards and comment on how my bum looked when I passed the mic to
him during a discussion session! I am by no means an ardent feminist
but did feel I struggled the whole meeting to be taken seriously (and
yes I am young and blonde).
At the same time however there were also a minority of women there who
wore clothes that were so skimpy the whole conference was talking
about them- including myself as I felt it was inappropriate. I realise
this sounds really hypocritical- but I guess that it why the issue is
so difficult. How to balance being professional and being free to
express yourself.
