medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There are 76 hits on the Bibliography of British and Irish History for the
word 'chantries' in title and 124 with 'chantry'. Unfortunately, I could
not find anything that combined either with 'patron' to narrow it down.
The classic book on chantries is K L Wood Legh, Perpetual chantries in
Britain (Cambridge, 1965) but a great deal has been written since.
If you search this list's archive, there is also a lot on chantries.
Where is your church?
I would guess that the chantry's founder set up the chantry and a group of
trustees whose job it was to oversee the chantry and its priests, including
appointing them, disciplining them and interpreting the foundation rules -
and that these are the 'patrons' - i.e. the people with power to present
incoming chantry chaplains to the local bishop. It would certainly make
sense if the religious houses involved were close to the church. It's also
possible that they may have appropriated the church, which would make them
the patrons of a resulting vicarage and so closely interested in any priests
serving in the church.
I hope this is some help.
